Culhane Resort Packing List

People often ask us what to pack for their trip to Culhane Lake. We usually start by asking, ‘Have you been to the UP before?’ because this sets the tone of the rest of the conversation. Are you looking for a place to just get away, sight see, or enjoy the great outdoors? The UP offers a lot of remote beauty but it is sparsely populated so expect to drive miles to even local attractions.

Culhane Lake Resort is located 30 miles from the nearest town - either Newberry or Paradise - so trips to gas stations, supermarkets, and bait shops must be planned ahead to avoid miles of driving.

Our cabins include the essentials—fresh linens on a queen bed with pillows and blankets, towels and a hot shower, indoor composting toilet, kitchen cooking supplies, kitchen towels, paper towels, and dish soap.

Additionally you may want to bring the following:

ESSENTIALS
For the minimalist, this packing list will keep you light and your trip focused on doing nothing but relaxing while you’re here.

  • Drinking water for coffee and for your walks

  • Shampoo, conditioner and body wash

  • Toothbrush + toothpaste

  • Pajamas and a change of clothes for however long you’re staying

  • Good hiking shoes for outdoor terrain

  • Anything you can’t live without for a night or more away (medication, etc.)

  • Rain jacket and extra layers

  • Winter clothing if staying in the cold months 

  • Charcoal and lighter fluid if you prefer using one of our charcoal grills

  • Bug spray for the warmer months

  • All the fixings for s’mores around the fire

ADVENTURE
For those who are here for fishing, kayaking or hiking the North Country Trail, this packing list will ensure your explorations into the wild are well-prepped for.

  • A good headlamp for night walks in the woods

  • Canteen for water, soup or tea

  • Bug spray and bear spray

  • Sunscreen for a day on the water

  • Telescope for watching the Northern Lights

  • Your own hammock to hang on the trees

  • For those who wish please bring your boat, canoe, kayaks, or paddle boards. Don’t have one? We can provide a couple kayaks for guest use. 

  • If you will be fishing please bring your gear and make sure to get fresh bait at either Mark’s Rod and Reel or Duke’s Sport Shop in Newberry, Michigan.

UNPLUG
For those who just want to enjoy some solitude to write, read or relax, here are a few ideas to make your stay even cozier.

  • An extra pair of thick socks

  • A good book and journal with extra pens

  • Art supplies

  • Your favorite board game and playing cards

  • The whole family will love a puzzle, especially a Michigan nature puzzle.

FAMILY TIME

We hear from parents that their kids are not thrilled that there is no Wi-Fi here. But, almost unanimously, the message we receive after the family stay, is they had the best time together “as a family” and can’t wait to come back again! That’s our goal!
