3 Things You Might Not Know About Tahquamenon Falls
If you are planning a trip to the Upper Peninsula, chances are you have heard about this waterfall. It really is spectacular and a must-see destination, even in the winter! Here are the top three things you may not know about the falls.
Tahquamenon Falls State Park is Michigan’s 2nd largest state park with over 46k acres. Our largest state park, Porcupine Mountains (The Porkies) is also located in the Upper Peninsula. It has over 59k acres.
The locals call Tahquamenon Falls “Root Beer Falls” due to the brown color of the waterfall topped off with the white froth as the water crashes down, giving it the look of root beer.
There are actually 2 waterfalls. Upper Tahquamenon Falls is 200 feet across and drops almost 50 feet. The lower falls are about 4 miles downstream, and are a series of five smaller falls around a small island. Here’s a PDF map of the lower falls area.
